Limit Complications When Giving Meds Via Feeding Tubes

Questions often come up about giving meds via an enteral tube.

Dosage form. Check labels for guidance. Liquids are often best...but thicker meds, such as ciprofloxacin suspension, can’t be given in tubes.

Be aware, hyperglycemia may occur if sugar content in liquid meds is high. Plus GI side effects are possible with hyperosmolar meds (acetaminophen, potassium, etc)...or sorbitol above 10 to 15 g/day.
