Combivent, a metered-dose inhaler that combines two different bronchodilators

Boehringer Ingelheim will soon market Combivent, a metered-dose inhaler that combines two different bronchodilators...the anticholinergic, ipratropium (Atrovent)...and the beta-agonist, albuterol (Ventolin, etc).

Combivent is for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It'll be used as SECOND-LINE therapy...for patients who don't do well on either bronchodilator alone.

Don't use Combivent for chronic asthma...there's no benefit from adding ipratropium to inhaled beta-agonists in asthmatics.
