new asthma drug, Accolate (zafirlukast)

Zeneca is hoping to make a big splash with their new asthma drug, Accolate (zafirlukast).

It's the first drug in a new class...leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRA). Leukotrienes have been a HUGE area for asthma research...their discovery resulted in a Nobel prize.

Leukotrienes are pro-inflammatory substances. They're released when mast cells are exposed to allergens. In the lung, leukotrienes trigger bronchoconstriction...inflammation...and edema.
