Benzonatate caps are attractive to young children because they look like candy. Caution patients that just 1 or 2 capsules can cause seizures, heart attacks, and coma in kids under age 2.
Alert people about other drugs that can be toxic in toddlers with just 1 or 2 doses, such as Lomotil, clonidine, tricyclics, calcium channel blockers, quinidine, quinine, hydroxychloroquine, or sulfonylureas. Sulfonylureas can also cause brain damage due to hypoglycemia.
